Cape Coral News

Below is a recent meeting update that Hans Wilson and Justin McBride had with the
City of Cape Coral.

Justin and I
met with a group from the City of Cape Coral.  The U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers is in the process of re-issuing SAJ-91, which is the overall federal
permit that allows the city to issue local building permits and have automatic
federal approval for certain waterfront facilities.  The current version
of SAJ-91 eliminates a lot of waterfront construction, requiring the applicant
to go through a lengthy (over 9 months) review process by the National Marine
Fisheries Service relative to impacts to Smalltooth Sawfish habitat.
Okay, I know your eyes are starting to glaze over but this has real
implications for people having the ability to construct boat docks, seawalls,
and perform dredging.  When there are obstacles to being able to moor a
boat in front of your home then that becomes an obstacle to both the material
purchase of a boat as well as a negative in our efforts to promote the boating
lifestyle.

In our meeting yesterday
Mike prepared the attached document for review and comment.  This is going
forward to the Army Corps as official comments from the City.  They are
also recommending that the ACOE develop a sawfish “key” similar to the one they
use for manatees (sample copy attached).  I made the statement that the
SWFMIA would support, through a vote and resolution, the development of a
sawfish key.  This should be something we discuss at our next regular
meeting.
